The lines between professional and personal life blur more than ever, making the effort to gain perspective both an art and a discipline. Even if you spent no time over the holidays reflecting on the past year, commit yourself to improving just one thing this year—your focus.

As the calendar flips to a new year, it’s natural to pause, evaluate, and plan. This ritual—a blend of reflection and resolution—seems almost universal, yet the execution varies widely, particularly for senior leaders. The greats at anything are always looking for two things: what’s next, and what can be improved.

The Overlap of Work and Life

Gone are the days when we could compartmentalize our roles. Work-life integration is now the norm, with personal commitments finding their way onto work calendars and vice versa. Some carry a work phone and a personal phone, that’s not really compartmentalizing! This convergence presents both challenges and opportunities:

Opportunity: The same overlap can foster a more holistic perspective, enabling leaders to align their professional goals with personal values. How often, and how deeply, do you consider your and your company’s values when evaluating options?

Challenge: Competing priorities and the time constraints of over-scheduling can erode focus. As concentration ebbs, leaders’ results can leave them feeling stretched thin and perhaps unable to do it all.

Beyond Time Management: Focus Management

Traditional time management often reduces leadership to a series of tasks to check off. Time blocking is popular but focuses on time vice problem solving or outcomes. While efficiency matters, senior leaders should ask themselves a deeper question: Am I focused on what truly moves the needle?

Here’s how to shift from simply managing time to managing focus:

• Clarify Priorities: Use reflection to identify what matters most. Hint—this requires one to sit still for more than a few moments.
• Audit Your Attention and Your Energy: Track where your time goes for a week. Are the activities aligned with your core goals? Are the activities energizing or draining? Do they contribute to the profitability of the business?
• Delegate Strategically: Offload tasks that don’t require your unique perspective or expertise. Some call this focusing on your genius. We all have at least one level of genius.
• Embrace Boundaries: Create clear transitions between work and personal life. Do you have boundary creep, leak, or seep? Most of us do.

Practical Steps to Gain Perspective

To lead effectively in 2025, commit to fostering a broader perspective:

1. Schedule Regular Check-Ins (with yourself): Dedicate time monthly to reassess your focus areas.
2. Seek Feedback: Ask colleagues and family members how your actions align with stated priorities. People will gladly offer feedback when asked and will be intrigued by your question.
3. Invest in Growth: Read. If you can’t read, then listen to books. This is the fastest and simplest way to learn something new. Alternatively, ask ChatGPT any question on your mind. It can lead you to a new form of collaboration. It is improving by the minute.
4. Celebrate Progress: Recognize both small wins and major milestones. Some do this readily; others hold back needlessly. If you are not celebrating occasionally then you are grinding. Life isn’t a grind.

As you plan for the year ahead, remember true leadership is not about managing time to tasks, that’s managing. Leading requires a level of focused intention. Dial in on your focus and you’ll be amazed at the results.
